1098-T FAQ's

1. What is the Purpose of IRS Form 1098-T?

The purpose of IRS Form 1098-T is to assist you in determining if you are eligible for one or more education tax credit(s).

2. How do I know if I qualify for an education tax credit, and how do I claim it if I qualify?

Read the current versions of IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, Form 8863, Education Credits, and Form 1040 or 1040A Instructions; or consult a professional tax accountant.

3. I disagree with the data reported on my Form 1098-T. Who should I contact to resolve this discrepancy?

4. How can I get a copy of my IRS Form 1098-T for years prior to 2010?

To receive a copy of your IRS Form 1098-T for tax years prior to 2010, email your request to USFSCO Customer Service at usfscohelp@uillinois.edu.  The request must include: the student’s name, University ID Number (UIN), the tax year you are requesting and the preferred method of delivery (i.e. fax, email or postal mail). Please provide the fax number, email address and/or mailing address to which it should be sent.

5. What information is reported in Box 1 of my Form 1098-T?

Schools may elect to report data for either Box 1 or Box 2 but not for both. University of Illinois elects to report data for Box 2 so Box 1 is blank.

6. What information is reported in Box 2 of my Form 1098-T?

The total amount you were billed during the reported calendar year for qualified tuition and related expenses. Qualified is defined as: "Tuition and fees that a student must pay to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution.” All mandatory fees are qualified except health related charges, transportation related charges, meal plan charges and housing charges.

7. What information is reported in Box 3 of my Form 1098-T?

Box 3 is checked if the University of Illinois has changed its method of reporting from the prior year. University of Illinois has not changed its reporting method so Box 3 is blank.

8. What information is reported in Box 4 of my Form 1098-T?

Any reduction in qualified tuition and related expenses made during the reported calendar year for qualified tuition and fees reported during the prior calendar year.

9. What information is reported in Box 5 of my Form 1098-T?

The total amount of all scholarships, grants and fellowship stipends you received during the reported calendar year. Note: Only up to $5,250 of graduate level tuition and fee benefits awarded to Graduate Assistants (GAs) and employees are reported in Box 5 of the IRS Form 1098-T; amounts exceeding $5,250 are reported on IRS Form W-2.

10. What information is reported in Box 6 of my Form 1098-T?

Any reduction in scholarships or grants made during the reported calendar year that were originally paid and reported during the prior calendar year.

11. What information is reported in Box 7 of my Form 1098-T?

Box 7 is checked if the amount reported in Box 2 includes amounts for an academic period beginning January through March of this calendar year.

12. What information is reported in Box 8 of my Form 1098-T?

Box 8 is checked if you were at least a half-time student at the University of Illinois during the reported academic year.

13. What information is reported in Box 9 of my Form 1098-T?

Box 9 is checked if you were a graduate student at the University of Illinois at any time during the reported calendar year. You are considered a graduate student by the IRS if you are enrolled in a graduate program or programs leading to a graduate degree, graduate level certificate, or other recognized graduate-level educational credential.

14. Where can I get information regarding IRS Form 1099?

15. Where can I get information regarding IRS Form 1098-E?

IRS Form 1098-E is a “Student Loan Interest Statement”. Please refer to your lender.  If the IRS Form 1098-E  needed is for a Federal Perkins Loan, Health Professions Student Loan (HPSL) or University Institutional Loan, please contact USFSCO Student Loans at (312) 413-0303 or slm@uillinois.edu.

16. How can I get my address on the IRS Form 1098-T corrected?

You will need to update your mailing address.

  • Log into the UI-Integrate Self-Service website
  • Select "Personal Information"
  • Select “Addresses & Phones”
  • Select “Mailing Address” from the “Type of Address to Insert” drop down menu
  • Select “Submit”
  • Enter the required information
  • Select “Submit”

After you have updated your mailing address, email USFSCO Customer Service at usfscohelp@uillinois.eduNote: UI-Integrate Self Service will not update immediately – updates will occur at the end of each month. However, any information updated in UI-Integrate Self-Service will be included in the final file transmittal to the IRS March 31st.

17. How can I get my social security number on the IRS Form 1098-T corrected?

You will need to download a W-9S form from IRS website at: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9s.pdf, complete it and return to Customer Service or fax to (217) 239-6897.
